Four rivers — Howrah, Dhalai, Muhuri and Why — are flowing above danger levels and more than 5,600 families have taken refuge in 183 relief camps.
State Finance Minister Brijesh Pandey told reporters on Tuesday afternoon that heavy rains have caused severe flooding in South Tripura and Gomati districts. Gomati District Magistrate said water in the Dambur hydroelectric dam has accumulated to dangerous levels and needs to be drained. “I urge all affected residents and downstream districts of the state to take immediate precautionary measures,” he said.
Authorities are providing essential services like food, drinking water and medical care to relief camps. But major roads, including the national highway, have been closed due to landslides caused by heavy rains. Efforts are underway to clear the debris and restore connectivity, according to the Indian Express. The India Meteorological Department has predicted light to moderate rainfall in Tripura for the next two days. A red alert has been issued for southern Tripura and an orange alert for the rest of the state.
A red alert calls on authorities to “take action” in the face of extreme weather, while an orange alert means the government is expected to “be prepared”.
